topiary trees
Is this a good idea for planting topiary trees?
Can I build a short retaining wall (about 2 to 3 pavers high) fill it with soil and plant my 3 ball topiary trees in the planters?
Or should they go directly in the firm ground?
Well……..I guess it depends on what your topiaries are……what plant species and how wide your planter will be. What’s underneath…..hopefully more soil.
If the soil underneath is nice an “plantable” that is turned and endowed with organic matter and similar consistency to the planter soil, then there’s a good chance the topiary roots will go into the soil below. If there’s a big difference, the roots will want to stay in the planter soil…….and even three pavers high isn’t very deep. Width is a concern because even topiaries can get some impressive roots that could knock the planter apart in a few years.
So I guess what I’m saying is…..make the underneath soil as good as you can, build your planter plenty wide so there is plenty of square footage for the roots to spread out as well. Then go ahead and plant in the planter. It will probably look lovely.
