caring for roses

Taking care of roses?
What exactly do you do to prune roses?
I have a pink rose shrub, two in fact–and they have been there for at least ten years. I’m still a child in middle school, but strangely, as I was observing them, I suddenly felt like I should do something to make them bloom their best.
It never occured to me how beautiful they were, but I really do like roses. They were planted in commemoration of my mother, so… what can I do to take better care of them? (I’ve never really payed much attention to them before!)
Erm… well… branches. It looks like branches.
First off, it’s great that you have something in commemoration of your mom, especially something so beautiful and peaceful as roses. Second, it sounds as though they’re doing pretty well. If you’ve never had to cover them in the winter before, you can just leave the pruning til next spring. When the earliest shrubs in your neighborhood start to bloom (assuming you live outside the south) just put on some heavy gloves and go out to the roses with a good sharp pair of pruning shears (basically outside scissors). On each branch, locate the bud closest to the tip – the bud will be a tiny little deep red spike sticking out of the branch. Cut the branch off at an angle about 1/4 of an inch past that bud (cut toward the tip end of the branch). Keep an eye on your shrubs – insects love to live and munch on roses. You might also give them some fertilizer once or twice each summer to keep them well fed.
Enjoy your blooms!
