house plants

There is an old saying that implies that some people are born with green thumbs and some of us are not. Some people say that they can just look at a house plant and it will die. Neither of these sayings is really true because all that is required for beautiful plants that are grown indoors or outdoors is to know the specific needs for each different kind.

Plants are like any other living thing in that different care is required. Some need a lot of water and others hardly any at all. Some need plenty of direct sunlight and for others it can mean certain death. For anyone who wants to grow plants of any kind you have to take the time to read about them and know what their requirements are.

If you are just starting to try your hand at plant growing, it is always better to start with plants that do not require a lot of attention. If you are a busy person and barely have time to tend to your self, the last thing you need is plants that will die quickly from a lack of attention. Mother in Laws Tongue or the technical term sansiveria, is a plant in the cactus family. It needs a well lit spot to sit in and water about once a month. If the dirt is moist, it does not need any yet.

Lucky Bamboo or dracaena is a neat looking plant that can be grown without soil. It can grow in a clear vase with a few inches of water, a little gravel, and not a lot of light. It goes great with an Asian d’cor scheme. A Rubber Tree or ficus, likes light and needs water about twice a week. This is a popular plant and will grow to a good size.

Jade plants live for years and like a lot of light. They need water about once a week or some, but if the tips of the leaves turn pinky red it is getting too much water. This plant is good for table tops or patios. Split leaf Philodendrons are a pretty plant that will trail when it grows large. It likes moist soil during the winter time, but it like it a little on the dryer side in summer. It likes bright indirect light, but will grow in shady areas fairly well.

When you buy your plants make sure and find out what kind of fertilizer or food they require and how often they need it. This usually does not have to be done to plants very often. Plants are good to have inside the home because they help the air quality in the home as well as providing a little natural beauty. Once you learn to care for the easy to grow varieties, you might be brave enough to try some of the more delicate varieties.
