The fruits of labour
With summer and beautiful warm days upon us, it's really important to be able to appreciate the benefits of your labours. The simple joys of relaxing in your garden while taking in the beauty and pleasure of all the plants you've grown, being able to eat al fresco or sit under an umbrella on a sunny day and enjoy a newspaper or book all have equal relevance, as gardening is as much about the pleasures as it is about the toil. Think of your garden as an outdoor room.
growing Herbs
I'm interested in cooking and I love to use my own garden produce in the kitchen. One thing that I just couldn't imagine being without are fresh herbs. These make an enormous difference to the flavour of food, and being able to pick your own ensures a full flavour that you can never obtain from dried or preserved herbs.
Spectacular summer show worth seeing
ONE of the most spectacular flowering shrubs, abutilon reaches a crescendo in early summer. Although it can begin flowering in spring and produces some flowers into autumn, the main flowering period is about now, and few woody plants are as showy.
Going green? Don't get blinded by eco-bling
Are you a green god or goddess? Are you the proud owner of a heat pump, solar panels or even photo-voltaic cells that take energy from sunshine? If so, they may not save you as much money as you hope.
House-sharing: Whose turn is it?
Sharing a house is a rite of passage for just about everybody. If you were to ask a random person on the street, chances are they could provide at least one good experience of house sharing, as well as a horror story of squatting in a grotty shack with 10 others while at university or travelling.
Green, white and gold lilies grace any garden
THE tall-stemmed, creamy-white flowers of the arum lily are remarkably beautiful. Broad and of sinuous outline, the flower has a distinctive shape that graces any garden. This plant has started flowering already in many gardens, earlier in mild areas and a bit slower in the colder parts of the country.
Budding little helpers
I have very happy memories of gardening as a young boy. My grandmother was a very keen gardener and encouraged me from an early age. I believe that these early adventures in the garden contributed deeply to my love and passion which, for me, turned into a career.
Create big style in small spaces
Lack of space should never cramp your style and anyone who needs convincing should drop in to tomorrow's open viewing at 35 Mulgrave Street, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
A treat and two veg
At this time of year, it's vital to keep pests under control so they don't eat your plants.
It's all Rosie
Glass-box extensions were a bit of a thing with us in the early Noughties, and homeowners all over Ireland coveted one. Rosie Campbell actually had the plans in place to demolish the five tiny rooms at the back of her house and install a high-tech, modern, glass space.
